In Retrospect

Micro trends are out: Asha Bennett (Pictured), replacing viral TikTok trends with sustainable thrift finds.

The emergence of micro trends has shown style influencers just how fast the fashion industry can chew you up and spit you out.

In today’s digital media landscape, trends like ballet-core, coquette-core and more have taken over the world of fashion in the blink of an eye and disappeared just as fast.

If micro trends have proved anything, it’s that fashion continues to act as a revolving door, with dated trends from the 50s, 90s and 2000s going viral online, as if they were brand new.

But this speedy rise and fall of popularity is only touching the tip of the iceberg when it comes to these trend’s complications.

Issues surrounding the sustainability of fast fashion partnered with a persistent cost of living crisis, have caused consumers to search for pieces that will be more timeless and non-wavering additions to their wardrobes, without burning a hole in their pockets.

But does that come with throwing away the individuality expressed through fashion?

20-year-old fashion marketing student, and full-time cool girl Asha Bennett describes her style as “eclectic”, and “quirky”, stretching outside the bounds of the classic ‘jeans and a nice top’.

“I love basics, but there’s only so many white t-shirts you can buy before it gets boring”, Asha explains. “I still want my fashion to be fun”.

But where micro-trends have failed her, like many others Asha has turned to Thrifting.

“Thrifting is such a cool experience because I can blend my individual style with unique and quirky pieces”. “When I’m wearing Vintage, it’s almost like I’m bringing a piece of the past with me, and it just makes me feel way cooler and on-trend”.

Despite evading micro-trends, Shopping second hand is a way that people can still participate.

As fashion remains in its cyclical form, whether its fur coats, ballet flats or capris, people wanting to partake in these trends can do so in a cost effective and environmentally friendly way.

Thrifting Vintage supports the wider mission of ethical clothing, and the curation of a style that is unique to everyone, which is unlikely to go out of fashion anytime soon.
